Finally able to show my latest publication!

This was for Bicycle Times Magazine, Stephen Haynes the art director was a very nice fellow to work with. Stephen is also an illustrator and one of his pieces graces the magazine just two pages before mine, it is a cool little print of a guy on a penny-farthing.

Well any way, here is my contribution, some of the most fun I have had in a while.

I did not see the issue before this issue, but it apparently had to do with the NAHBS; and my illustration was for the Spoken Word or letters to the editor section, so I did a ton of research and took a ton of "reference" from the site, and the individual bike builders sites. Yesterday I happened upon the old issue in Boarders and found that many of the bikes that caught my eye were featured in the magazine! Cool, huh?

This was a piece I completed with Scott Bontz over at the Land Institute. Scott is the AD / Editor over there and he is a really great guy! It was great fun to work with him, and complete the image and I can't wait to work with him again.

Here is a bunch of process on this thing I'm working on.

I was out of town for a few days it was my grandparent's 50th Anniversary, and my mom came down from Ohio, and sister came from Hawaii... it was their first time seeing my Daughter! It was a fun time, but I'm back now and getting my nose to the grind stone.

Breaking out some old stuff

recently did some quick compostional changes to this in photo shop, and I would greatly appreciate any comments / advice.

I have been working on some older stuff now that I have the time to. I must confess to a little bit of a slump, and use the excuse that I am attempting to complete incomplete work.

My true hope is to jump start my creative...whatever. For the past two years I have had several projects that I have been waiting to jump onto, and now is the perfect time!

Truthfully though, Tallahassee is different from any place I have been, or maybe I am different now, but there are new concerns on my horizon. I now find that shirtless men battling huge robots is not nearly the only thing on my mind, (I also think of shirtless ladies.) I am finding the world economy, ecology, and people of much more complex than any fantasy you or I could create, and I find my self hard pressed to justify doing anything fantastic, or a bit sci-fi. Questioning whether or not anything produced now could have a positive affect on anything doesn't help either.

Yet, still each night I dream of robots, Dragons, or a planet ruled by super inteligent apes. So, I'll stick to what I know in my dreams..

..for now

Color choices for the final

so I can't really decide which color variation to go with...

The top left is the one I have worked on the most, with a couple extra hours in CS2

Top Right is just the traditional piece scanned in with a little leveling... which after completing I realized the two main faces where a little too pink, oh my!

Bottom left is the scanned version with the line work tossed back on top of it, and some color balancing and leveling

Bottom right is the same as the bottom left with some variation and a little background work

Each of them have some thing a I like, but I am thinking top left.

The color sketch on the bottom left is for an illo about long distance relationships and how people continue to communicate, interact, and cope over vast distances...which is hitting a little close to home, as my lady is far away.

Just to the right is my concept for the senior portrait project. I am trying to illustrate the idea of different influences masking a persons original thoughts, through the use of word bubbles filled with images covering the image of myself.

Also some random sketches to the top left.

Synergism Illustration

This is a Piece, featuring David Bowie for my Synergism class . Ziggy Stardust, Fairy, Beatles, Lantern fly, Space, Saturn, and Satellites are the different things that I am throwing together to get my imagery. We need to use synergism (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/synergism) to create a new take on a creature... for some reason I choose the frightening fairy.

A comment on how "hard core" McCain is... The idea came from thinking of how McCain was a prisoner of war, and how often inmates will tattoo themselves to show pride or other affiliations.

Process / product : water color and mylar transfers

Materials

Frosted mylar paper, at least 100lb print paper, water colors paraphernalia, dish soap, container with water, lacquer thinner, 2 printing blankets, and some large cotton swabs. A printing press doesn't hurt either

Preparation

Mix a little bit of dish soap into your water dish, this helps the water color to adhere to the mylar.
Print out a drawing, image, or text block. Have it ready, and waiting for the lacquer transfer... Make sure you flip it horizontally before you print it!

Printing

Presoak the paper that you would like to print onto for about 20-30 minutes.
Now the fun begins. Paint with the water colors onto the mylar paper, and then allow time to dry. I found that placing the frosted mylar over the drawing helps in aligning the color and lines when you go to print. Remember the image should be flipped!
After the water colors have dried onto the mylar take the paper that was soaking and press it mostly dry with a large hand roller. Kind of like "mostly dead."
Next make a begin to make a "stack" on the press with the two press blankets locked under the roller of the press. Flop the free edge of the top blanket over the press.
Then place the paper, previously soaked and recently rolled dry, face up on to the bottom blanket.
Place the mylar with the dry water color face down on the stack. Flip the top blanket back on top of the stack and you are ready to roll!
So go ahead a pull your print! As the press rolls over the print the remaining water left in your soaked paper reactivates the pigment, the water is pushed out of the back side, and the capillary action of the paper soaks up the pigment. Now you haev the first part of the Print done
That funky little Print can be placed to the side and allowed to dry. If you have multiple pieces it is best to keep them all at the same step in the process.
Once the Print has dried make the stack again, the Print should be on top of the bottom blanket face up.
Align the print-out on top, and then soak a large cotton swab in lacquer thinner. Holding the drawing in place rub the soaked cotton swab over the drawing until it becomes quasi-translucent. Make sure to perform this step with your gloves on and in a properly ventilated area!
Place the top blanket over the stack and roll it through the press attempting to be as smooth and regular as possible, and it is finished. That is if you are satisfied with the product, feel free to touch it up as much as you want.

The lacquer transfer is just what I did. Other people choose to do a more finished, built up painting on the mylar creating wonderful, and rich in color images. Also, this works with any water soluble medium. Acrylics work too if your fast enough, for the prints must be pulled before the acrylics dry.
